WJBF Scholar Athlete: McCormick’s Toniyah Wideman

MCCORMICK, S.C. (WJBF) — Toniyah Wideman is everything her head coach Gena Wideman could ask for in a student-athlete.

Toniyah is one of the top students at McCormick High School. She’s also one of the best athletes in South Carolina.

“Toniyah is a tremendous asset to us,” McCormick athletic director and girls basketball coach Gena Wideman said. “As a student she’s always on top of grades. She cares about what happens to her and her life and what she does in order to move forward, and to the team she’s a leader.”

Toniyah was named an all-state basketball player last season, while also earning all-region basketball and volleyball honors. Toniyah also earned the coaches’ award for her efforts in track & field, and she does all of this on top of a part-time job.

“It’s hard, very hard, but you [have] to do it,” Toniyah Wideman said. “My coach, Gena Wideman, is a big role model because she balances everything. She’s like a second mother to us. She takes us under her wing from ninth grade on.”

Toniyah said she’s not sure where she will attend college, but wants to study either kinesiology or education and training.
