New Silver Bluff coach won’t compare himself to Al Lown

Petticoat Junction, SC (WJBF) — It’s one thing to replace a great head coach. It’s another to replace a legend. That’s the tall task former Irmo assistant Burton Able faces this fall at Silver Bluff High School.

“There’s nothing like it,” Able laughed during Wednesday’s practice. “I can’t explain it. Those are just absolutely huge shoes to fill.”

Able isn’t exaggerating. Lown has been a fixture in the CSRA as the Bulldogs’ coach the past 23 seasons. He won two state championships at ‘The Bluff,’ along with 14 region titles and 212 games.

As Silver Bluff’s new football coach and athletic director, Able believes following in Lown’s footsteps actually makes his job easier.

“I told Ms. Johnson, the principal, I looked at her and said you know there’s nothing broken at Silver Bluff,” he said. “She kind of looked at me kind of funny, because when you have somebody like Coach Lown, there’s really nothing broken.”

The Bulldogs join a new region this season, moving up to AA football. They’ll open up the 2016 season at South Aiken on Friday,
