The Aquinas boys basketball team celebrated its first state championship in program history at the school’s winter sports banquet on Sunday night.
The Fightin’ Irish defeated top-ranked Saint Francis in the GHSA 1A private state championship game 65-60 to claim the title.
“It means everything,” senior guard and co-MVP, Daniel Parrish, said. “We were able to bond together this season and to be able to make history with my brothers means everything. It still hasn’t sunk in, and I don’t think it’s going to sink in for a while.”
“It meant a lot just because of how hard we worked this year,” Aquinas head coach, Darren Douglas, said. “It was just awesome to see the growth of these guys, and the fact that they will get to carry this lesson with them for the rest of their lives is awesome. Money can’t buy that.”
The Irish finished the season 27-5.
