Pacers rally to take down rival Jaguars, 63-56

The University of South Carolina Aiken women’s basketball team overcame a double-digit deficit to knock off Augusta 63-56 Wednesday evening.

The Pacers are now 15-12 overall and 11-10 in league play. The Jags fall to 7-20 overall and 6-15 against conference foes. 

Head coach Mark Miller‘s team was led by Kyrie’ Chandler’s game-high 19 points. Kwajelin Farrar accounted for 15 points and 15 rebounds while Melyk Taouil came off the bench to hit for 10 points. Alex Canady and Madison Williams each dished out four assists.

In the first half, USC Aiken trailed by as many as 16, but fought back to make it a 10-point contest at halftime. Williams buried a three-ball with 5:52 to go to make it 29-16. Down 31-16, Farrar hit a lay-up and Chandler made two charity tosses to pull within 11 at 31-20. Farrar’s lay-up brought it to 35-25 at the half.

Miller’s squad limited the visitors to a school-record tying three points in the third stanza. USC Aiken poured in 13 markers to tie it at 38-38 entering the fourth stanza. Canady got things going with a three-ball at the 7:55 mark. 

The Pacers pulled within six on a lay-up by Star Toomey. Moments later, another shot by Toomey pulled the home squad within three at 38-35. Canady’s three-point shot with 35 ticks remaining in the quarter knotted it at 38-38.

USC Aiken reeled off the first six points of the fourth stanza – all of which came from Taouil. The Jaguars pulled within one at 46-45, but Farrar nailed a jumper to go up by two. The Pacers extended the lead to six again on another bucket from Farrar with 2:18 to go.

The Jaguars pulled within four at 56-52, but USC Aiken continued to bury foul shots en route to the victory.

For the game, USC Aiken held a 26-16 edge in the paint and outscored the visitors 11-2 in second chance points. USC Aiken canned 19-of-53 from the floor (35.8 percent) and made 20-of-29 from the charity stripe (69.0 percent). The squad held a 47-27 edge on the glass.  

The Pacers return to action Saturday when they play at Young Harris at 1:30 p.m.
