16-year-old becomes youngest Palmetto Amateur champion in tournament’s 41-year history

Aiken, SC (WJBF) — Trent Phillips was riding high Saturday off his three-stroke win in the 41st Palmetto Amateur tournament.

“I feel like I can tear this course up anytime I come now, so yup, I’m excited,” the Inman, South Carolina native said.

He had a right to feel that way. The 16-year-old Phillips became the youngest champion in the Palmetto Amateur’s history.

“It’s cool — I think I’m the youngest in the field to be honest with you, at 16,” he said through a smile. “So to win this is big. It’s really big.”

Phillips is very familiar with Aiken’s Palmetto Golf Club. He’s played in the Southern Cross tournament and finished third in this spring’s tournament.

At such a young age, Phillips appears to have a bright future and he still has two more years of high school at Boiling Springs, just outside of Spartanburg, before he attends UGA.
