AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – Richmond County Deputies are investigating a homicide on the 2300 block of Martin Road.

Deputies and the Richmond County Coroner’s Office responded to a disturbance call Tuesday evening. Upon arrival, they found 58-year-old Awanda Thomas who appeared to have been assaulted and possibly shot at least one time inside her home.

An autopsy has been scheduled at the GBI lab in Atlanta.

Richmond County Deputies have arrested Thomas’s son, 40-year-old Donte Bell Sr.

Bell has been charged with Murder, Possession of a Firearm or Knife During a Crime, and Possession of Cocaine. Bell was publicly named as a suspect in the case shortly after an assault was reported by people in Thomas’ neighborhood.

Both Bell and his mother lived in the same home.

Warrants allege that Bell struck his mother in the head multiple times in the head with an unknown object, causing severe blunt force trauma to her head. Bell is accused in warrants of having a black and silver .40 Caliber handgun on him during the assault.

The cocaine possession charge was not listed in the initial public service release seeking information as to Bell’s whereabouts, but was added after his arrest.
