The King is gone but in Augusta not forgotten

AUGUSTA,Ga  (WJBF) In Augusta there’s statue of the King, the bronze likeness of Arnold Palmer is a popular attraction at the History Museum, thanks to the Masters golf goes with Augusta.

“You can’t tell the history of Augusta about talking about its golf history absolutely,” said Augusta History Museum Executive Director Nancy Glaser,

And Palmer is part of that?”

“And Palmer is a huge part of that,” said Glaser.

Arnold Palmer didn’t win the most Green Jackets, but his play in the tournament helped bring the masters to the masses.

“He came to legendary status about the same time Television found him and Television found the Masters and Television found Arnold’s Army who known he’s beloved in Orlando but we love him her to,” said John Patrick host of the Golf Show, broadcasted around the country.

Even after his prime days were over there was Arnold Palmer firing the ceremonial first tee shot, of the tournament along with friends Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player, Palmer loving the moment.

“What can I say it’s a fantastic moment think all these people coming out here at this time of the day see if three guys can hit the ball off the tee it’s wonderful,” said Palmer in a 2012 interview.

Palmer did not take a swing at this year’s Masters he wasn’t up to it looking back it’s was foretelling but there’s no doubt he wanted to one more time.

“Yes because he loved playing golf he just loved hitting a golf ball he wanted to do that every day of his life,” said Patrick.

Another love for Palmer was flying and early in his career he would come to Daniel Field Airport.

Busters Boshears dad and uncle were running the airport then, he said when Palmer came it was an event.

“There would be a small group of people there to see him he would always take time to talk especially the kids talk to kids and sign autographs as everybody knows he was a people friendly person,” said Boshears.

Boshears said as Palmer’s fame rose and he moved up to a bigger airplane he could no longer land at Daniel Field, but he said Palmer’s wife called to apologize  saying they were not coming to Daniel Field because they needed a longer runway Buster Boshears always remembers that and said that  was pretty classy.
