Edgefield, SC (WJBF) — It was a special day at Strom Thurmond High School Friday as they received one of the NFL’s Golden Footballs. It’s part of a Super Bowl 50 promotion by the NFL. According to a release from the league, “high schools across the nation, and around the world, will receive a commemorative Wilson Golden Football for every player or head coach who graduated from their school and was on an active Super Bowl roster. Nearly 3,000 players and head coaches, and more than 2,000 high schools, will be recognized. Players and coaches will also have the opportunity to personally deliver golden footballs.”
Strom Thurmond’s connection is Ira Hillary. He’s a 1981 Strom Thurmond graduate who went on to play for the Cincinnati Bengals in Super Bowl XXIII. Ira’s nephew Antwaun Hillary is the current head football coach of the Rebels.
