South Carolina offers free admission to all state parks on Friday

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – South Carolina is offering free admission to all 47 state parks on Black Friday.

The promotion, called #OptOutside, encourages people to spend some time in the great outdoors the day after Thanksgiving. It was started by REI.

Make sure to post your pictures to social media using the hashtags #OptOutside and #OptOutsideSC.

And that’s not all. Stay tuned for the state’s 12 Days of Deals, from Dec. 1 to12, where the parks will be offering a variety of discounts including discounts on cabins and camping!

Local organization holds MLK Day celebration in Denmark

DENMARK, S.C. (WJBF) --- Denmark Cares hosted its second annual MLK Day celebration at the Denmark Gazebo on Monday, January 18 at noon. The theme for the event was Peace, Unity and Justice. The event celebrated the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King while offering messages of peace, unity and justice for a stronger community in Denmark. Each one of the speakers reminded the audience of Dr. Kings’s legacy and messages to remind citizens of the work that is needed to have a more unified an is d peaceful community.

Organizers say the speakers and performances were all African American males with connections to the community. The keynote speakers were Brandon Jamison and Willie Carter, natives of Denmark and graduates of Denmark Olar High School. Other guests included County Councilman Dr. Johnathan Goodman, City Councilman Calvin Odom, Dr. Yvette McDaniel, faculty of Denmark Technical College, and founder of B.C. Crawl and soloist Nigel Fisher.

866 COVID-19 vaccinations administered by Aiken Regional; more than 1200 appointments scheduled

AIKEN, S.C. (WJBF) --- Aiken Regional Medical Centers has administered 866 COVID-19 vaccinations to hospital employees and eligible Phase 1A community members as of January 18, 2021. There are currently 1,288 people scheduled for vaccine clinics through the end of January, officials say.

On Sunday, January 17, 2021, South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control provided Updated Guidance for Vaccine Providers stating, “Because vaccine demand has now far exceeded supply, DHEC is finalizing an equitable model for vaccine allocations.” Additionally, “While providers should prepare for increased capacity, no large-scale vaccination events should be held that would exceed a provider’s baseline allocation (established the week of January 25) without first consulting with DHEC to ensure sufficient doses would be available. It is unlikely providers could hold large-scale events until the state’s weekly allocations from the federal government increase.”
