CHEROKEE Co., S.C. (WSPA) – Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office deputies are investigating a dog attack that happened Wednesday morning in Gaffney.
According to a sheriff’s office news release, the attack happened around 6:30 a.m. in the 100 block of Marietta Road.
When the deputy arrived on scene, they saw a large German Shepherd type of a dog standing over an injured woman in the yard of home.
The dog reportedly was still aggressive after he had mauled the woman and the deputy tried to use his Taser to get the dog away from the woman, but was unsuccessful.
According to the release, the dog then charged the deputy, who fired several shots at the dog.
The deputy then rendered air to the woman, applying a tourniquet to her leg to stop the bleeding.
Sheriff’s Office officials said the dog was in a fenced in area of the yard and the woman was visiting a friend at that location.
The 61-year-old woman was then airlifted to Spartanburg Medical Center for treatment of her injuries.
The dog was taken by Animal Control officers and was later euthanized after sustaining gunshot wounds by the deputy who responded to the call.
The sheriff’s office is continuing to investigate the incident.
