There’s a new program aimed at decreasing violence and helping inmates succeed after getting out of prison here in South Carolina.

The Department of Corrections is teaming up with the Vera Institute of justice to provide therapy for 18 to 25-year-old inmates.

Prisoners with all kinds of charges can apply for the program.

“85-percent of the folks that come to the corrections get out in five years, and this truly is changing the folks that come in here,” said Bryan Stirling with the SC Dept. of Corrections.

“So, they’ll go out better and not come back at a very high taxpayer cost and be productive citizens.”

The Vera Institute of Justice plans to give the state a progress report on the program at the end of the year.
