Shoppers reflect on closing Deans Bridge Road Kmart

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) –  Another major store leaving south Augusta leaves shoppers having to find another place to catch some deals.

“It’s just another thing that south Augusta is losing and I hate to see that,” said Wilma West, who lives nearby.

The move is truly a big blow to West and other shoppers on the south side of town.

Tony Deal doesn’t frequent Kmart, but he comes enough.

“Not unexpected at all. The one in North Augusta closed. The other one here in Augusta closed. Corporate-wide, Kmart is in bad shape,” Deal said.

One-by-one, shoppers packed into the store set to close at the end of the year. And if you’re not driving to Kmart, you’re either catching the bus or walking.

NewsChannel 6 caught Jacqueline Bush heading inside Kmart to do some shopping.

“It’s closer. Now you have to go way out. It’s going to be hard because when we come to Augusta, I live out of town in Burke County, this is my favorite store,” she said.

The Deans Bridge Road Kmart isn’t the only one on the chopping block. Dozens of others across the United States will be closing, too, and it’s all because of a decline in sales.

“The other big box stores, like Target and Walmart, are just more modern and more up-to-date,” Deal explained. “[There are] Not necessarily better prices [at those stores], but it just makes for a better experience.”

And as their shopping carts assist shoppers with catching those final sales, people are already deciding where to go next.

“Probably to Roses because you can get a pretty good bargain there,” West said.

Bush had a simple solution. “Walmart.”

Citi Trends and Bi-Lo aren’t far away, but for some Kmart has what others don’t.

“I might come once every two months or if I hear there’s a big sale on some auto parts. I won’t miss it. I feel sorry for the people who work here. They will probably have to find something else,” Deal told us.
