Scuttle’s Island Will Not Open Memorial Day Weekend

Augusta, GA (WJBF) – Representatives on behalf of the proposed water park, Scuttle’s Island, held a press conference at Ocozzio Thursday morning for formal announcement.

Spokesperson and investment partner Andrew Thompson stood alongside general manager Marc Glissman as they gave an update.

They confirmed the park will not open this coming Memorial Day weekend, as promised.

Thompson shared information of a “personnel issue” taking place back in January. He claims the incident was the cause of the delay in construction.

When asked if it had to do with former spokesperson, investment partner and local developer, Benjamin Bell, he would not confirm. He did confirm that Bell is not a part of the (now) ten-member team of business partners, as they move forward with water park plans. Bell has said that he was the one who came up with building a water park in the CSRA more than a year ago.

The same ten business partners also own the Christmas light attraction, Lights of the South, and property in Columbia County. They own the land under the name Cedar Rock Holdings, LLC. Currently, the water park’s announced site belongs to Harry Miller, not Cedar Rock Holdings LLC. The site sits off exit 5 at I-520 in Aiken County.

Thompson shared that he expects to have the land purchased and in Cedar Rock Holdings’s name within the next fifteen days. Within the same time-frame, Thompson and Glissman agreed they should also know a more certain time-frame of when the park will open. Optimistically, they said the park should be complete by the end of 2016.

Glissman said he’s been staying busy on the back end while the “personnel issue” was completely addressed. In the meantime, Thompson has issued a stop-work order on the property.

He also confirmed that they will not accept a no-interest loan from the city of North Augusta, as offered to the help the business venture late last year.

Glissman said he hoped to see construction within the next couple months and is hopeful for smooth sailing from here.
