"Out There...Somewhere": Wrong Way-a-Roundabout

AUGUSTA, Ga (WJBF) - Drivers have been negotiating the Wheeler and Aumond Road roundabout for a few weeks now.

"I've been through it probably about ten times and nine times out of ten it worked," said Sue.

Now when you get to the roundabout, just follow the arrows on the sign. Get to the roundabout...go clockwise...wait, what?

"I saw the sign, and I noticed it was going in a clockwise motion, which is definitely not how a roundabout should go," said driver Thomas Lambert.

That's right, a correct roundabout sign goes counter-clockwise, but all four at Wheeler and Aumond have the the arrows pointing the wrong way.

"No, I didn't know that! Oh that would make a big mess wouldn't it? But maybe that was the problem," said Sue.

The cars we watched seemed have no problems, despite the arrows. But maybe it was a traffic study on the observance of signs by roundabout drivers.

"Was it kind of a test to make sure people were paying attention?"

"No that was an honest mistake," said Anthony Taylor of the City Engineering Department.

City engineers blamed the contractor for the mistake, the contractor said it was a factory glitch.

"Did they come from Europe? Were they English?"

"I couldn't tell you where they came from. I don't know how that mis-communication occurred," said Chip Price.

All four signs will be replaced but they're barely used. Seems like a waste.

"Any thought at all? Leave the signs and just change the intersection? That would work."

"No, I don't think that would work too well," said Chip.

This roundabout worked well enough as long as you didn't follow the sign, Out There Somewhere in Augusta George Eskola WJBF NewsChannel 6.
