One dead in overnight shooting in Appling

UPDATE: COLUMBIA COUNTY (WJBF) – Early Tuesday morning the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office investigated a shooting that happened on 4213 Old Lincolnton Road.

The call came into dispatch around 12:28 a.m. and according to the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office, one person was shot and killed.

The charges for the shooter have not been released, but the name of the victim has been released.

The victim’s name was 52-year-old, Darrell Franklen Gossett.

According to Columbia County Deputy Coroner, Harriett Garrison, he was pronounced dead at 1:24 a.m.

He was located outside of an enclosed front porch with gunshot wounds to his chest.

The shooter, Jason Christopher Wheeler, and Crystal Laurie Russ were both detained at the scene.

Wheeler is Gossett’s uncle who shot him in self-defense.
