North Augusta goes wireless, free WiFi now part of Downtown amenities

NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. (WJBF) – The City of North Augusta is moving forward with a new service, free WiFi.

At a press conference Friday, City Administrator Todd Glover revealed nearly 5 blocks of Downtown North Augusta would be in the coverage area of the network.

The service went online as of 11 a.m. and city leaders says this is all part of a bigger plan to bring more people to South Carolina’s Riverfront.

The City of North Augusta teamed up with Spirit Communications, to bring the news amenity Downtown.

“If y’all know me, free is a price I like to pay.” North Augusta Mayor Lark Jones said.

Glover says for sometime the city council has been focusing on ways to boost local business. The City Administrator says within the last year council has eased restrictions on businesses owners, by revising the downtown overlay district. This made it easier for business owners locate their businesses in the downtown area.

Just in the last few months, a new Food Truck Stop was created on Jackson Square, adding more food options to a venue that was lacking in the area.

Now the newest addition, free WiFi is an incentive for people to flock to Downtown North Augusta.

“We believe that a downtown is a reflection of the business pulse of a city,” said Glover.

While the City of North Augusta did paid for the installation of the new technology, Spirit Communications donated all the equipment and bandwidth.

“Hopefully in the future as we get our Downtown Greeneway connector going, that will allow people to access the internet [and] WiFi throughout North Augusta.” Glover told WJBF NewsChannel 6.

Long-time resident Charles Reinert says North Augusta has always been on the cutting edge of technology. While he’s new to having a smart phone, he says more places need to follow in North Augusta’s footsteps.

“It helps in a lot of other ways,” Reinert said. “I mean you have perfect reception, it works faster.”

Glover says the new service won’t cost the city a dime.
