Haley would like Savannah River terminal finished yesterday

RIDGELAND, S.C. (AP) – Gov. Nikki Haley says she would like a $4.5 billion container terminal that South Carolina and Georgia are building on the Savannah River finished yesterday.

Haley was briefed Monday on planning for the Jasper Ocean Terminal on the South Carolina side of the river just downstream from Savannah. Haley says she expects legislatures in both states will have to shortly begin banking money to help pay for the 1,500-acre terminal.

South Carolina lawmakers set aside $300 million for the Charleston Harbor deepening and Haley said assurances the money was in place helped speed the project along.

Planners now say the Jasper project will be needed by 2025 when capacity at terminals in Georgia and South Carolina starts to run out. Haley thinks capacity will be reached before then.
