SAVANNAH, Ga. (WJBF) — A family and a community are in mourning following the shooting death of a police officer in Savannah.
The incident happened on Saturday, May 11 at 8 p.m. Bull Street.
Sgt. Kelvin Ansari, a 10-year veteran of the Savannah Police Department, was shot after approaching a robbery suspect.
Officials said officers responded to follow-up on a previous robbery call. When authorities went to a car with the suspect inside, the shooting happened.
Savannah Police Department would not confirm who shot first, according to WSAV.
Sgt. Ansari and another officer was rushed to the hospital. The second officer was treated and released.
Police say the suspect was also taken to the hospital. The condition of the suspect is still unknown.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigations will lead the investigation.
