Channel 2 Action News has learned that a child brought a loaded gun to a Cobb County preschool Wednesday morning.

Marietta police told Channel 2’s Carl Willis that they received a 911 call from the Center for Early Education at the First Baptist Church of Marietta.

“Teachers stated that they had located a gun and rendered it safe, but they needed us out to investigate and see what happened,” Officer Chuck McPhilamy with the Marietta Police Department said.

According to a letter home to parents, a teacher found a loaded handgun in a preschooler’s tote bag at the beginning of the day.

“At this moment, nobody has been charged. We’re trying to figure out how this happened,” McPhilamy told Willis.

In a letter, the school director informed parents that:

“The CEE teacher immediately brought the tote bag to the CEE office to report the incident. The tote bag and contents were removed from the preschool and taken to an area away from any children.”
“Initial indications are the child didn’t even know the gun was in the bag,” McPhilamy said.

Willis spoke with a parent who said all of students have the same bag solely dedicated to bringing their things to school.

The Division of Family and Children Services is investigating along with Marietta police after an incident that parents said could have had grave consequences.

“I think that given the circumstances, everything went as best as can be expected,” McPhilamy said.
