Bodies found in burned truck in Taliaferro County after apparent murder-suicide

Georgia News

UPDATED JANUARY 2, 2019 AT 6:30 P.M.

The search for a Greene County couple is possibly over and the news as to what happened shocked people between two small communities.

“They had a call, a domestic call in Greene Coutny, and they got the helicopter and flew over here going to Greene County and spotted the truck down there in the woods,” said Taliaferro County Sheriff Marc Richards.

The Green County Sheriff’s Office reported Tuesday that Steven and Melissa Rhodes were missing and last seen heading towards Crawfordville on Bethany Church Road around midnight that day. The vehicle, also shared by law enforcement on its Facebook page, was later found.

Sheriff Richards added, “GSP flew the helicopter and found the truck burned on an old logging road.”

That road is Carters Ford Road just off highway 278 in Crawfordville.  Richards said the it all happened after a domestic dispute that originated in Greene County where the couple lived.  And while both still need to be positively identified, the bodies found in that burned truck appear to have died from a murder suicide.

“It appears that he shot the lady, his wife, and then burned the truck up and shot himself,” he concluded.

Again, the investigation is ongoing.  The bodies were taken to the GBI Crime Lab for a positive match and details on how they died.

The Taliaferro County Sheriff’s Office says they are investigating an apparent murder-suicide in Crawfordville, Georgia.

Investigators say Tuesday evening, deputies located a Ford pickup truck with two deceased individuals inside.

The bodies were found on a logging road off Carters Ford Road in Crawfordville.

Officials say the vehicle fit the description of a vehicle that was connected to a missing couple from Greene County.

Officials say the vehicle was burned and due to the condition of the two occupants, a positive identification could not be made but it appears it is Steven Rhodes and his wife Melissa who were reported missing on Monday.

The two bodies will be transported to the GBI Crime lab for an autopsy.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call the GBI or the Taliaferro Count Sheriff’s Office.
