One child is dead and four others were injured in a fire on Graydon Street. According to Savannah Fire, the fire was reported at 1:10 a.m. on Wednesday, May 30.
When crews arrived at the two-story brick apartment home, they saw flames streaming from a bedroom on the ground floor. Two adults and four injured children from the ground floor apartment were outside, but a 5-year-old child was still inside the burning apartment.
Several crews battled the blaze and others search for the missing 5-year old. The unresponsive child was discovered in a corner of a bedroom, where the fire appears to have begun. The four injured children were transported to Memorial Medical Center. Two of them were severely burned and were taken to the Augusta Burn Center.
The 14 upstairs residents and the six surviving residents of the downstairs apartment were displaced. Red Cross was called to provide the families with housing assistance.
