Voters in Columbia County will be asked to approve or deny ESPLOST money during a special election called for March 19th.
The Education Special Local Option Sales Tax of one cent is used to fund captial improvements such as construction on new schools or additions to existing schools. The money would also go toward new technology and buses and cannot be used by the board or individual schools for operating costs.
ESPLOST money has been used for construction projects on 16 schools in the past 19 years, and this vote is a continuation of that money. The Columbia County Chamber of Commerce is asking voters to support the referendum. Chamber President/CEO, Tammy Shepherd says, “The Columbia County School System is the number one economic driver for growth in Columbia County. Business growth follows residential growth and ESPLOST is the fairest funding tool for both residents and businesses to build new schools.”
Early voting for the special election will begin on Monday, February 25th
