Early NCAA signing day brings big smiles, scholarships

The NCAA early signing period brought plenty of holiday smiles to the families of local student-athletes. Years of training, studying and performing at a high level on the field paying off in the form of scholarships.

In front of a large collection of family and friends, Williston-Elko big target KeyShawn Toney signed his national letter of intent to play for the South Carolina Gamecocks. Toney will be an early enrollee at USC this spring. He was recently the lone class 1A representative at the Shrine Bowl.

At Emanuel County Institute, defensive end Curtis Spann III made plenty of Seminole fans happy by signing to play for Florida State.

Evans standout defensive back Derrick Canteen will also be leaving early as he heads to Statesboro, Georgia to suit up for th Georgia Southern Eagles. Canteen was the 6A Region 3 player of the year and will be an early enrollee for Chad Lundsford’s team.

Georgia Southern also landed Jefferson County quarterback Jayden Jenkins.

Washington County defensive back Preston Daniels signs to play for Kennesaw State.
