Downtown Augusta was getting funky tonight for James Brown’s Birthday Bash.

The James Brown Band put together a concert in his memory

NewsChannel 6 got an exclusive look at the soundcheck.

Tickets were available to the public the Monday after Masters and sold out within hours.

Band members who played with Brown for more than 14 years were taking the stage tonight. They played all of his top hits.

Featured singer and Organizer for the Bash, Amy Christian, says, “James Brown Day, happy birthday Mr. Brown. We miss you, boss. We’ve all been crazy since you’ve been gone.”

Gone, but not forgotten. The Godfather of Soul would turn 86 this year.

His long time band members knew just how to keep his memory alive.

“We’re just going to funk this place up and get it stanky. that’s what’s going on tonight. we’re going to stank it up. augusta is going to be stanky tonight,” says Christian.

Members of the James Brown Band put on a tribute concert in his memory.

“JAMP is going to be headlining the whole thing, so we are so excited for the kids to take on the godfathers wishes,” says Christian.

Other special performers include Bootsy Collins, James Brown’s grandson, and MC, and Cape Man, Danny Ray. Ray says its great to be in Brown’s hometown since he always had Georgia on his mind.

“You know there’s one thing he was always missing about Augusta, Georgia. No matter where we went in the world. You know we went all over the world before, six, seven passports, and he always stays in Augusta, Georgia,” says Ray.

Singing all of hits, the band with the funk is reminiscing about performing with the man himself.

“I feel good! I feel so good, i want to kiss myself and that I miss you man. I miss you so much. I miss that voice. I miss singing up next to him. You know, I miss watching him, I just miss him so much.”

With a packed house, the band says there is no other way Brown would want his birthday celebrated.

Drummer, Robert Mousey Thompson, says, “oh, he would love it. He would be honored. I mean he would be Mr. Brown. He would just be smiles, you know. I can just see him smiling right now.”

Other celebrations tonight happened at the Augusta Common for a Soul and Funk party. NewsChannel 6 is wishing Mr. Brown a happy birthday.
