Elderly couple assaulted after home invasion in Perry

PERRY, S.C. (WJBF) - The Aiken County Sheriff's Office is investigating following an assault at a home in Perry, South Carolina.

The incident happened at a home on Highway 39 on Wednesday, January 2. "It's just one of those things that you never know what's going to happen," Chris Hartley said.

Hartley has known the Toole family for more than 50 years. He says that the homeowner, Earl Tool, opened the door after hearing a knock. We're told two suspects asked to use the phone after running out of gas.

"He said when he went to turn around, he said the guy jumped on him and evidently started beating him up," he recalled being told by one homeowner before he was taken to a local hospital.

Tool's wife was also injured. "A knot on her head and a big contusion on her leg," he added.

The suspects even stopped the elderly couple from being able to call for help. "They ripped the phone out of the wall and he actually had to drive about a mile or two down the road to a neighbor's house to call 911," Hartley said.

As soon as he saw what was going on, Hartley jumped on social media asking for your assistance.

"Jumped on as fast as I could to see if we could get any help with people because they are going to brag," he stated.

Looking out for one of their own Is just a part of life in Perry.

"We try to protect our elders around here and a small town like we have, we notice things," he shared.

"They are going to talk and when they do, they will get what they deserve I'm sure," Hartley said.

The Aiken County Sheriff's Office is still investigating. They do not have much information to go on, but they know that they are looking for two male suspects.

If you have any information, you can give them a call. Or you can give Crime Stoppers at call at 1-800-CRIME-SC.
