A man is dead after he locked himself in a car on I-26 and refused to get out of his vehicle.

According to the Lexington County Sheriff Jay Koon, the suspect was shot around 1:45 p.m. on Tuesday when he made a sudden move as SWAT team moved in to arrest him.

Officials closed the interstate near Cayce for three hours while they negotiated with the armed man.

The Lexington County Sheriff’s Department says the suspect began a pursuit early Tuesday afternoon in southern Lexington County before traveling west on I-26 into Columbia.

The suspect made his way back to I-26, traveling east and stopped on the eastbound side.

Sheriff Koon says deputies saw the man put the gun to his head as he stopped.

The suspect’s name has not been given at this time. Officials say he was wanted on a failure to appear in general sessions court warrant.

The original charges related to that arrest are unlawful carrying of a pistol, illegal possession of a weapon by a convicted felon and failure to stop for blue lights.
