Motorcycle driver dies after being hit by SUV in Aiken County

WAGENER, S.C. (WJBF-TV) — A woman is dead and a man is in jail after a deadly crash happened Saturday morning involving an SUV and a motorcycle.

It happened around 8:40 a.m. on Wagener Trail Road about one mile south of Wagener.

The victim has been identified as 57-year-old Bette Lucas.

State troopers say 28-year-old Samuel Cheatham was driving his SUV when a group of motorcycle drivers made a left turn into a driveway.

Investigators say Cheatham tried to pass the motorcycles but in the process ended up hitting Lucas.

She died on the scene.

Authorities say the Cheatham fled after the accident, but officers were able to arrest him later.

He’s in the Aiken County Jail.

Cheatham is charged with 2nd Offense of Driving Under Suspension, Improper Passing and Driving with an Open Container.

Highway Patrol also has a hold on him in the system.

More charges could be coming.
