A couple has been charged in connection with the discovery of a malnourished man with a disability and three unaccompanied children at an Atlanta home.

Atlanta police spokesman John Chafee tells news outlets officers were called to the home Saturday and found a disabled 21-year-old man who looked like he hadn’t been eating and three children between the ages of 9 and 12 who appeared in good health. Police arrested 38-year-old Shalanda Monroe and 33-year-old Jarvais Monroe when they returned.
The 21-year-old was hospitalized in critical condition.
Police say Shalanda Monroe is the mother of the man and three children, and Jarvais Monroe is their stepfather.
The Monroes are charged with violating Georgia’s protection of disabled adults and elder persons statute. It’s unclear whether they have a lawyer.
