NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. (WJBF) – A man is in custody following a late night hostage situation in Aiken County.

Part of Jefferson Davis Highway in North Augusta was closed in both directions early Thursday morning as officials responded to what the Sheriff’s Office described as a “hostage situation”.

The shutdown was in the area near I-520.

Investigators say the hostage was safely recovered, and the suspect, 42-year-old Nathaniel Meade, is in custody.

Multiple law enforcement officers from the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office, North Augusta Public Safety and South Carolina Highway Patrol shot and injured Meade. He was reportedly shot about 5 times.

Meade was taken to an area hospital for treatment. He is currently booked at the Webster Detention Center in Augusta, awaiting extradition to South Carolina.

SLED is now investigating.

Currently, Meade is charged Pointing and Presenting a Firearm at law enforcement.

The incident in Aiken County was the 11th officer involved shooting in South Carolina in 2022. This is the second officer involved shooting involving the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office this year.
