McDUFFIE COUNTY, Ga. (WJBF) — Investigators say a man shot and killed his wife at a home along Augusta Road in McDuffie County on Wednesday morning.

According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI). the man arrested has been identified as James Wilson, III, 74, of Thomson.

Authorities say Wilson has been arrested by the GBI and the McDuffie County Sheriff’s Office and has been charged with Murder and Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony.

McDuffie County Coroner Paul Johnson has identified the victim as 75-year-old Virginia “Sue” Wilson. She died as the result of a gunshot wound.

Deputies responded around 10 a.m. where they found Wilson holding a gun to his chest.

Investigators say Wilson shot Virginia just prior to the 911 call being received by the McDuffie County Sheriff’s Office.

A short standoff ensued and negotiators from Columbia County Sheriff’s Office was called in to assist at the scene. Wilson soon surrendered without incident.

An investigator on scene tells WJBF NewsChannel 6 that Wilson claimed he “messed up” and that “his wife was in the house.”

Authorities say that members of the Columbia County Special Response Team entered the residence and located the body of Virginia Sue Wilson inside a rear bedroom.

“We’ve been in contact with our district attorney, here, he’s been aware of what’s going on. So, basically, we will continue our investigation and go from there,” said GBI Special Agent Patrick Morgan.

According to GBI, Virginia Wilson’s body will be transported to the GBI Crime Lab in Decatur, Georgia, where an autopsy will be performed to determine cause and manner of death.
