AIKEN, S.C. (WJBF) – The investigation continues into the officer involved shooting in Aiken, Thursday.
The incident happened at the intersection of East Pine Log Road and Charleston Hwy.
SLED confirmed that an armed man was shot during an encounter with an ATF agent and a task force officer assigned to the U.S. Marshals Service.
Aiken County Coroner Darryl M. Ables has confirmed that the shooting was a result of a chase after U.S. Deputy Marshals were attempting to execute an arrest warrant at a hotel on Whiskey Rd. that resulted in a high speed chase that ended in a crash. The victim, 34-year-old Robert L. Wright was killed after multiple shots were fired by the deputy marshals.
NewsChannel 6 learned that Wright was indicted for drug and gun possession in April of 2021. Read the full indictment below:
“My cousin’s back windows are shot out. His side windows are shot out. His front window has eight bullets on one side and three on the other,” Wright’s cousin Tameka McNair said.
Newschannel 6 spoke to a family member who says there could be more to the story.
“Anybody that knows my cousin knows he may have tried to get away but he’s not going to shoot a police officer,” McNair said.
Wright was pronounced dead on the scene. He will be autopsied tomorrow in Newberry.
