Corrections Officer Taken Hostage, Prompted Armed Response At Perry Correctional Facility

Pelzer, SC (WSPA) – UPDATE 6:19 p.m.: We have learned more information about what caused an armed response at Perry Correctional Moday afternoon.

According to officials, at around noon, a corrections officer was taken hostage in an inmate’s cell. It took over four hours for law enforcement to diffuse the situation.

The officer is being treated at an area hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.


There has been an incident at Perry Correctional Institution after an inmate hurt an officer, according Clark Newsom, head of communications at the South Carolina Department of Corrections (SCDOC).

The officer is now outside and getting medical attention. He is expected to be okay.

He says “the community is not in jeopardy from the incident going on.”

WSPA reporters from Air 7 can see that tactical teams are gathering outside a building.

SCDOC spokesperson Stephanie Givens is relaying information from the command center set up by the department.

Givens said it is an ongoing, “very fluid situation” that started around 1pm Monday.

There are not many details about what is going on, only that it is still going.

A South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) says they were called to help assist the prison.

Perry is a Level 3 prison for men. Level 3 means maximum security.
