Commission questions cost of records storage space


AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – Some Augusta leaders are in no rush to find more space for city records.

As we first told you on Tuesday, the city is running out of room at it’s record retention office.

One proposal is to spend $2.1-million on renovating the old license and inspections office on Marvin Griffin Road for the records.

Though some city leaders think that’s too much for storage others say the extra space is needed.

“The records are important to refer to when the courts demand certain things,” said Commissioner Ben Hasan. “From what I understand, quite often citizens come to the clerks office looking for records from the 1800’s and only facilities like that can help up maintain those records for the long haul. History is important, as we all know.”

A commission committee did not approve renovating the license and inspections building at this time and instead directed staff to explore other options that may be less expensive.
