Charges filed in Aiken toddler death

AIKEN, S.C. (WJBF) – The Aiken County Sheriff’s Office has filed charges in the death of a toddler in Aiken.

30-year-old Derek Roberson has been charged with Homicide by Child Abuse. Roberson was arrested on July 3rd for unrelated warrants and was identified as the person who was acting as the caregiver to the victim.

The child’s mother, 29-year-old Amanda Bryan, has been charged with Unlawful Neglect of a Child. She was arrested on Wednesday.

The investigation is ongoing.

According to the incident report, the Sheriff’s Office was called to Aiken Regional after the mother brought the child to emergency room unconscious.

The child’s mother told investigators that she was called home by her boyfriend after the child was found not moving after a fall.

Medical personnel from the hospital told investigators the child was suffering from severe head trauma, both new and old injuries.

The child died after being transported to Augusta University Health.
