(CNN) –  Good riddance, robocalls! The FCC may have the answer to it.

One study says Americans receive more than 26 billion robocalls last year.

The Federal Communications Commission would give phone companies the authority to block the calls, by default.

The technology already exists, but companies have not released their solutuions over fears it could be considered illegal.

If approved, the agency would eliminate the idea of it being against the law.

It could take effect as early as the end of the year.
