Augusta Southern National Kicks Off

Augusta, GA – The Augusta Southern Nationals are back on the Savannah River for the 29th year. The races kick off this morning with the Test and Tune practice round then Night of Fire this evening. The race is expected to bring a major economic impact to the CSRA.

Drag boats will line up and race across the Savannah River starting around 9 a.m. Friday.

Augusta get ready to experience the “World’s Richest Drag Boat Race!” As countdown clock begins the boats will take off when they get the green light! Just like drag racing on land, if any of the boats cross the line before the light they are disqualified.

“We like to see them here because it gives us a chance to show off Augusta also when they leave we’re over a million dollars better off the community that is in terms of their spending while they’re here so it’s just a great event,” said Dayton Sherrouse.

To experience Thunder on the River it will cost you $30 at the gate for series tickets, children 10 years old and under do get in free with an adult. The proceeds from the drag boat races benefit local chapters of Special Olympics in Georgia.
