Augusta Jaguars Competition Squad Building a Champion

News

Augusta, GA (WJBF) — The Augusta University competition squad was grand champions in their division at the CheerSport Regionals in Atlanta Saturday. They will now go to Nationals, also in Atlanta, next month.

It’s a pretty amazing accomplishment for a team that was basically built from scratch last year. Coach Kenietha McRae says she had 2 freshman last year, Emily Banks and Ashley Wilcox (both of whom are still on the squad) who “worked their butts off.” They did basically anything they could do to get more girls to come out for their team.

“Me and Ashley here went to every single orientation just trying to get girls.” Emily Banks, now a sophmore, said. Ashley Wilcox added, “If we saw cheerleading on their shirt, we’d chase them down and say ‘hey, we have a cheerleading competition, join us.”

They are now up to 17 girls on the team and hope to be over 20 next year.

Here is the release from the Jaguars following the win over the weekend:

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Augusta University Competition Cheerleading team took first place at the CheerSport Regionals and were named Grand Champions for the college level four division on Saturday, Jan. 23 in Atlanta, Ga., at the World Congress Center.

The Jaguars sent 16 student-athletes to compete at CheerSport for the first time in 20 years. The competition is preparation for the CheerSport Nationals where Augusta will face off against Division I schools including the University of Georgia, Florida State University and the 2015 CheerSport National Champions, University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill.

Coached by the Administrative Assistant AVP of Enrollment Services at Augusta University Kenietha McRae, the Jaguars began practices in November to prepare for the season.

“The road to CheerSport was not an easy one,” McRae said. “After suffering two injuries and last minute replacements and routine changes, we pull out our first win as CheerSport Grand Champions. We would like to thank Augusta Cheer Academy (ACA) for allowing us to practice in their gym and making ACA our second home and for all the support they’ve given us as a first year team.”

Augusta returns to Atlanta Feb. 13-14 for CheerSport Nationals. They also compete March 5 for the Peach Belt Spirit Competition and March 20 in Augusta for COA Masters Cheer & Dance Tournament.
