AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – A South Augusta community is reeling after an early Wednesday morning fire killed 24-year-old Akneetra Labord. The home she lived in on Tallwood Way caught fire just before 6 a.m. Wednesday. The news got even worse on Thursday as the coroner confirmed another death. Akneetra’s mother, 45-year-old Leticia Labord died from her injuries in the fire.
The entire right side of the house collapsed where the fire started and was hot enough to melt the siding off a nearby home. The Augusta Fire Department is still investigating the scene to determine the cause of the fire.
Neighbors say they could only watch in horror as the towering inferno engulfed the building. “I woke up this morning and I heard a big explosion and it was terribly loud because our window facing the neighbor’s back door. said next door neighbor, Gabriele Williams. ”I heard people screaming, it was awful. Then all of a sudden I see big old flames going up in the air.”
Williams looked out her bed room window and saw flames shooting out of the roof of her next door neighbor’s home. “I ran into my daughters room and I told her to come on out because we had the baby over there and we started running out because. I know it was explosions, I did not know whether it was coming to our house or not. So we ran to safety.”
Not everyone was able to escape. Four Labord family members were in the house when the fire started. The daughter and father were able to run out unharmed but the Augusta Fire Department had to pull the other daughter and mother away from their burning home.
“When they pulled out the two victims, they realized that one was already deceased which is a female 24 years of age. The other victim is the mother of the family and she is actually in the hospital, fighting right now,” said Sgt. Monica Belser with the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office.
Family and friends were left in shock after a disaster they never saw coming. “Very bad, It’s a tragedy over there. It’s very bad,” said Williams.
