A garbage truck drives into a sinkhole on Central Avenue

AUGUSTA, GA (WJBF) – Officials say the section of Central Avenue will remained closed until repairs are complete.

Traffic is being re-routed as follows:

  • Eastbound traffic on Central Avenue will turn right onto Troupe Street, then left on Wrightsboro Road, then left on Hickman Road to return to Central Avenue.
  • Westbound traffic will divert onto Kings Way, turn left on Troupe Street, and right onto Central Avenue.

AUGUSTA, GA (WJBF) – Part of Central Avenue is blocked off after a dumpster truck drove into a sinkhole.

It happened just after 8 a.m. Thursday where Central Avenue meets Kings Way and Hickman Road.

No injuries have been reported.

An Advance disposal truck, was making a right hand turn off Meigs onto Central Avenue, when the drivers work day came to an alarming end.

The truck crashing into a large sink hole, thankfully the driver wasn’t hurt but he said it felt like an airplane crashed into the back of his truck.

City Engineers facing the problem of getting truck out and figuring out why it happened and whether there’s a risk on Central Avenue of it happening again.

“It’s definitely like a sink hole we have to get the truck out first that’s the first thing we’re working on trying to get the truck out how to get the truck out of the street once we do that we can look to see what actually caused the issue we’re also working on a plan on how we will fix this also this emergency.”
