Mariah Smith embraces being sole African American in Augusta Natonal Women’s Amateur

72 women from 25 different countries will play in the inaugural Augusta National Women’s Amatuer, but only one is of African American descent. 

University of Tennessee’s sophomore Mariah Smith embraces the fact that she is not only apart of history in this event but also pushing the color barriers of golf.

“She is the first hopefully she won’t be the last it’s moving when we go places now and little African American girls girls of many colors that talk about Mariah being an inspiration to the,” said Kevin Smith, Mariah’s dad.

” I definitely want to be here and play well and show the younger generations and other minorities that if you work hard you can set your heart whatever your mind and your heart to,” said Smith.
