Every two seconds a person in the United State is in need of a blood transfusion.

On Monday, the American Red Cross issued an emergency blood shortage announcement.

The Red Cross says this means the national supply of blood isn’t keeping up with the demand. To help close the gap that widens during the summer months when people are traveling and school isn’t typically in session, the call has been issued for donors.

“Every 54 days blood will perish. So we need a constant replenishment of that blood,” Account Manager Carrie Friend said.

Several donors including a few who shared said why they chose to give.

“You just never know when somebody might need your blood,” one law enforcement officer said.
