Over a lot of opposition, Augusta leaders have approved a smoking ban for private businesses.
City leaders approved the second reading of the ordinance on a six to four vote.
The new policy bans smoking at bars.
Several bar owners asked city leaders to grandfather them and allow smoking but that request was denied.
“It’s a sad day for business in Augusta. You have people who have no knowledge of our business whatsoever dictating how we’re suppose to run our business. They got no idea. They’ve got multiple places where the BreathEasy group lied to them. They don’t care. They just want to pass a law to say they passed a law,” said Allie Katz. bar owner Bryan Birmingham.
The new smoking policy takes affect January 1st.
