Norfolk Southern opens family assistance center to aid residents following train derailment

Norfolk Southern opened its family assistance center, to assist residents in Bartow, GA following a train derailment.

The company is compensating affected members of the community for their inconvenience and out of pocket expenses.

Affected residents should bring a driver’s license or other proof of assistance, and receipts of expenses.

The center is located at: Jefferson County Emergency Services, 1841 Highway 24 W., Louisville, GA 30434. 800-230-7049

The hours of operation are Tuesday, January 8th, 9:00 am – 6:00 pm. 

Norfolk Southern plans to hold a press conference at 5 p.m. on Tuesday.

Environmental teams will continue to monitor the air in Bartow and surrounding communities.  Residents may smell odors related to hydrogen peroxide and hydrochloric acid, however, the levels do not pose a health risk.

Representatives of the Center for Toxicology and Environmental Health are available to answer questions regarding the chemical and air monitoring by calling 478-607-2335 9:00am – 9:00pm EST.
