Man dies after being pulled out of backyard swimming pool

A third person has died in a local swimming pool in as many weeks in the CSRA. 

The latest happened late Thursday afternoon.  According to Richmond County Coroner Mark Bowen, 66 year old Leon Harpe was unconscious when pulled from a neighbor’s pool in Hephzibah.

It happened at a home in the 4300 block of Fairbluff Road.  Witnesses say Harpe was in the pool with a child. 

Suddenly, the homeowner noticed the child have difficulty and rushed to the pool.

After rescuing the child, the homeowner spotted Harpe at the bottom of the swimming pool. 

Harpe was taken to Eisenhower Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

The child was transported to Augusta University Medical Center for treatment.  The condition is unknown.

Harpe’s body is being sent to the GBI lab for an autopsy.
