AUGUSTA, GA. (WJBF) – Richmond County Sheriff’s Office released more details concerning the deputy involved shooting at Charlestowne South Apartments on Lumpkin Road.
In the press conference, Sheriff Roundtree says 25-year-old Ladeeje Harvey was the passenger in a car driven by 25-year-old Darius Rivera. Deputies pulled the car over during a traffic stop at the Charlestown apartments. The deputies could smell marijuana coming from the vehicle.
According from a report from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, while Deputy Tarpley was speaking with the driver, Harvey began walking away from the car with her 5-year-old son. Deputy Tarpley asked Harvey to stay in the car, but she refused to stay in the car. Harvey was walking towards her home when Deputy Tarpley asked Deputy Dontavion Jones to detain Harvey.
Deputy Jones attempted to detain Harvey at the entrance of her home which resulted in a struggle between Harvey and Deputy Jones. While Deputy Jones chased Harvey attempting to stop her from entering the apartment, Deputy Tarpley secured Darius Rivera in the back of the patrol car. Then, Deputy Tarpley joined Deputy Jones as they struggled to get Harvey into custody.
Harvey, who had her 5-year-old child in front of her, then reached into her purse, pulled out a revolver and shot Deputy Tarpley in the upper right chest as he was entering the home to assist Deputy Jones. Deputy Jones returned fire striking Harvey at least twice in the leg.
“At no point would you have ever thought that a mother one would pull a weapon on two deputies and fire that weapon, but also to have your five-year-old child standing between you and that officer. So you can actually imagine how the officers felt when they in fact had to return to fire also seeing that a five-year-old child was also there too,” said Sheriff Roundtree.
Harvey ran away but was stopped and taken into custody a short time later. Harvey’s five-year-old son received cuts on his knees from glass but no other injuries are known. He required stitches and was sent home with family members.
Harvey has previously only had traffic charges and no pre-existing warrants. Darius Rivera has two State Court bench warrants.
According to the GBI, Harvey has been charged with 2 counts of Aggravated Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer, Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Crime, and Cruelty to Children in the Second Degree. She has been released from the hospital and is currently at the Richmond County Jail.
Once the GBI completes its independent investigation it will be given to the Augusta Judicial Circuit District Attorney for review.
Deputy Tarpley was released from the hospital and is in stable condition.
Deputy Jones is on administrative leave.
