People in downtown Augusta could get a chance to celebrate the birthday of the Godfather of Soul.
The Miller Theater wants to hold a concert May 3rd for James Brown’s birthday.
To pull that off, and to make the event free to the public, the Miller requested 10 thousand dollars from the city.
But a commission committee said the Miller wasn’t big enough to hold the event, and voted to hold a concert at the Common instead.
“We wanted to make it funky at the Miller absolutely there wasn’t anything planned, so we would offer the space to do it, and we thought with the donations from the city and other sponsors it would be a free event, but they thought too many people would want to some and it would not work at the Miller,“ says Coco Rubio from the Miller
Rubio says moving the event to the Common would increase the costs for the Miller.
And he’s not sure if management would still want to be involved at the Common.
