MARTINEZ, Ga. (WJBF) – One child has died in the aftermath of a house fire in Columbia County.

Columbia County Deputies responded to the scene of a house fire at Sarah Creek Court.

The fire apparently started at 2:14 pm at the residence on the 200 block of Sarah Creek Court and spread to a next door residence.

As deputies arrived on scene, they were able to evacuate the surrounding residences and businesses backing up to the houses.

Forcible entry was made at 2:14 pm where two cousins were said to be inside. Deputies were able to help the 11-year-old out.

The second child, 10 year-old Nicolas Mai, was unable to be located due to the extent of the fire.

Fire/Rescue and EMS who were on the scene were able to get the fire extinguished and located 10-year-old Nicolas in the downstairs living room, behind a couch. EMS transported him to Doctors Hospital. Their parents later arrived on scene and followed the ambulance to the hospital.

Major Steve Morris with Columbia County Sheriff’s Office confirms that 10-year-old Nicolas has died.

CID and the Fire Marshal are on scene.

According to Major Morris, “It is not known at this time how the fire started, but we do know that the children were in the home alone.”

A Deputy also evacuated the home next door. The deputy was able to help two kids get out of the home. The kids were not injured.
