UPDATE: The Intersection at Wrightsboro Road and Troupe Street will soon be reopened after an accident took down a traffic light and knocked over a fire hydrant this morning.
The intersection has been shut down for more than five hours now due to the city’s inability to shut off the water gushing out of the hydrant and the repairs on the utility poles that were damaged. Several people were transported to the hospital after sustaining non-life-threatening injuries around 10:30 a.m. this morning.
Utilities Director Tom Wiedmeier said that the main the hydrant was connected to was the central feed to downtown and shutting down the entire main would have turned off water to a major swath of businesses and homes.
