AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – WJBF News Channel 6 has learned that a former Augusta commissioner, Andy Cheek, has died.

Chance & Hydrick Funeral Directors and Cremation Services shared the following information on its Facebook Page regarding Mr. Cheek’s final arrangements:

Fred Ancil “Andy” Cheek, III, 66, entered into eternal rest Friday, March 10, 2023.

A Celebration of Life service will be held Friday, March 17, 2023, at 12 p.m. in the chapel of Chance and Hydrick Funeral Directors. Interment will be at Westview Cemetery immediately following the service. The family will receive friends Thursday, March 16, 2023, from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Andy was born and raised in Augusta, Ga. and attended Richmond County public schools. He graduated from Butler High School. He later volunteered at his alma mater as a band and football booster. He was a youth athletics coach for the Richmond County Parks and Recreation Department where he coached youth soccer, baseball, and football.

He devoted much of his time to environmental studies and was a research specialist with Savannah River Solutions/Savannah River National Laboratory for over 34 years. The South Augusta native was quick-witted, had a wonderful sense of humor and had a heart for public service. He served two terms as Augusta’s District 6 Commissioner from 2000 to 2008. During those terms, he served as a board member with the Richmond County Board of Health and as the Engineering Services Chairman for Augusta Richmond County. After completing his 8 year term, he moved to North Augusta, S.C. where he continued his community involvement in such roles as president of the Mossy Creek Elementary Parent Teacher Organization, soccer coach and band booster. Andy was also a member of the Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity at Augusta College, the Fleming Masonic Lodge #718 and the Six Mile Yacht Club. He was preceded in death by his father, Fred Ancil Cheek, Jr.

Survivors include two sons, Fred “Andy” Cheek, IV (Melissa) and Aldon Cheek (Holly); two grandchildren, Lilly Cheek and Aiden Cheek Nelson; his mother, Patricia Driggers Durrence (Juan); two brothers, Robert Cheek and Randy Cheek (Lisa); nieces and nephews, Casey Cheek, Molly Gordon, Randall Cheek, Rob Cheek and Hannah Cheek.
