Entertainment zone downtown moves forward

Taking steps to have more fun downtown.

A commission committee voted Tuesday to accept recommendations from the entertainment zone sub-committee.

The recommendations would designate downtown between 5th and 13 street an entertainment zone and would allow live music to be played an hour later until midnight.

It would also ease the rules for food trucks and allow bars to have drinking and smoking areas on the sidewalks outside their businesses in the entertainment zone.

“It creates a new Augusta downtown. I mean where you have a zone with certain things and elements people are going to want to come downtown. People are going to spend their money downtown and this is just the start,” says Commissioner Sean Frantom.

Now a proposal to allow bars to serve drinks in to-go cups was not part of the official recommendations, Commissioner Frantom says the sub-committee wasn’t prepared to take that step at this time.
